How to Pack Fragile Items for Moving: A Professional Packer's Method

The professional method for packing fragile items is layering: cushion the box base, wrap every item individually, fill all voids so nothing shifts, and never stack heavy over fragile. Most transit breakage comes from movement inside the box, not impacts outside it.

What materials do I actually need?

Bubble wrap, packing paper (never newsprint directly on surfaces — ink transfers), corrugated sheets, strong double-walled boxes in small sizes, and wide packing tape. Professionals use small boxes for fragile items deliberately: large boxes get heavy, get stacked wrong, and flex in transit.

How do professionals pack glassware and crockery?

  • Wrap each piece individually in paper, then bubble wrap for high-value items.
  • Place plates vertically on edge — like records, not stacked flat. Vertical plates survive; flat stacks crack.
  • Stuff glasses and cups with crushed paper before wrapping.
  • Line the box base with 2 inches of cushioning, fill every gap, and do the shake test: if you hear movement, repack.

What about electronics and appliances?

Original boxes are best if you kept them. Otherwise: photograph cable setups before disconnecting, remove trays and loose parts from appliances, defrost the fridge 24 hours ahead, and keep TVs upright and never flat. Mark the carrying side clearly.

Which items should never go in the truck?

Jewellery, cash, documents, medicines, and anything irreplaceable travel with you — every professional mover will tell you the same. For everything else, transit insurance plus timestamped photos of items before packing gives you a clean claim trail if something does go wrong.

Is professional packing worth it?

For fragile-heavy homes, usually yes — trained crews with multi-layer material break dramatically less, and insured professional packing shifts the risk off you. It's included in our household shifting service in Pune, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. Either way, use the timing in our moving checklist so packing never becomes a moving-day scramble.
