The Complete Moving Checklist for India: 4 Weeks to Moving Day

A smooth household move in India comes down to starting four weeks early: book your mover in week one, sort documents and utilities in week two, pack and declutter in week three, and keep the final week for essentials, valuables, and handover formalities.
4 weeks before: lock the essentials
- Compare quotes and book a verified mover — our guide on how to find the best packers and movers covers what to verify.
- Fix the moving date; avoid month-end if you can, rates are higher.
- Inform your landlord or housing society; many societies need advance notice and a moving NOC.
- Start a moving folder for quotes, the LR, and insurance papers — you will need them for any damage claim.
3 weeks before: documents and utilities
- Apply for school transfer certificates if you're moving cities.
- Plan electricity, gas, water, and broadband disconnection/transfer dates.
- Update your address for bank, Aadhaar-linked services, and deliveries.
- If a vehicle is moving with you, book vehicle transport now — carrier slots fill early.
2 weeks before: declutter and pack smart
- Sell or donate what you won't take; volume directly drives cost, as explained in our charges guide.
- Photograph valuables and electronics before packing — timestamped photos strengthen insurance claims.
- Label boxes by room and mark fragiles; see how to pack fragile items.
Moving week: the last-mile details
- Pack an essentials bag: documents, chargers, two days of clothes, basic kitchen items, medicines.
- Defrost the refrigerator 24 hours before loading.
- Keep jewellery, cash, and critical documents with you — professional movers will tell you the same.
- On moving day, count boxes at loading and again at delivery before signing the receipt.
