Moving House with Kids: How to Make Shifting Easier for Children
By Kaushik Family Relocation Team
The two decisions that most reduce moving stress for children are timing the move around the school calendar and keeping their room packed last and unpacked first — children cope well with change when their anchor points stay stable.
When should we move with school-age kids?
Align with the academic year if possible — a summer-break move gives children a clean start rather than a mid-term entry. Apply for transfer certificates 3–4 weeks ahead (it's in week two of our moving checklist) and shortlist schools near your new home before the move, not after.
How do I prepare children for the move?
Tell them early and frame it concretely: show photos of the new home and neighbourhood, and let them pack a small "first box" of their own favourites that travels in the car with you, not the truck. Older children can label their own boxes — involvement converts anxiety into ownership.
What should moving day look like for kids?
For toddlers, moving day is best spent with grandparents or a trusted friend — trucks, strangers, and open doors are a stressful combination. For older kids, give them one clear job. Keep a day bag with snacks, water, medicines, and one comfort item per child.
How do we settle in quickly after the move?
Set up the children's room first, fully — bed made, familiar curtains if possible, toys out — before perfecting any other room. Restore normal mealtimes and bedtimes within the first two days, and walk the new neighbourhood together early: the sooner it feels explored, the sooner it feels safe.
Does professional help actually matter here?
It matters most for families: a trained crew that packs, moves, and unpacks in a defined window shortens the chaos period children feel. Our household shifting teams in Pune, Mumbai, and Hyderabad handle family moves daily — and if you're moving with pets too, our pet moving guide pairs with this one. Plan your family's move with us.
