Moving Insurance in India Explained: Transit vs Comprehensive Cover

Moving insurance in India comes in two forms: transit insurance, which covers major events like accident, fire, or theft of the vehicle, and comprehensive (all-risk) cover, which also covers damage to individual items during handling. For fragile-heavy homes, comprehensive is usually worth the higher premium.

What does transit insurance NOT cover?

The gap people discover too late: transit-only policies generally don't pay for a single broken television or a scratched wardrobe if the truck arrived safely — they respond to vehicle-level events. Item-level breakage needs comprehensive cover, and even then, items you packed yourself are often excluded because the insurer can't verify the packing standard. That's a real reason to use professional packing for valuables.

How is the premium calculated?

As a percentage of the declared value of your goods — typically in the low single digits, varying by cover type and route. Under-declaring value to save premium backfires: claims settle proportionally to declared value. Declare honestly, and keep the declared-value list with your quote papers.

Four things, all created before or during the move: the itemized inventory, timestamped photos of items pre-packing, the Lorry Receipt, and the delivery receipt with damage noted at delivery — not the next morning.
