Household Storage and Warehousing in India: When You Need It and What to Ask

You need storage when your move-out and move-in dates don't line up — a delayed possession, an interim rental, a transferable job with temporary accommodation. Good household warehousing bridges that gap with inventoried, insured storage rather than a friend's garage.

When does storage make sense in a move?

The classic cases: your new flat's possession is weeks away; you're moving cities before finalizing a home; a renovation overlaps the move; or you're downsizing and deciding what to keep. In each, storage converts a rushed compromise into a planned two-stage move — goods travel once to the warehouse, once to the final home, each leg with its own LR documentation.

What should a proper warehouse have?

Ask to see (or video-tour) the facility and look for: covered, ventilated storage off the floor on pallets or racks; pest control; fire safety equipment; CCTV and controlled access; and item-level inventory at check-in. Goods should be stored packed — the packing standard matters as much in month three as on moving day.

How is storage priced?

By volume and duration — a monthly rate for the space your inventory occupies, plus handling at check-in and check-out. Insurance during storage is a separate line from transit insurance; confirm both exist and where one ends and the other begins, using the insurance guide as your map.

What should I keep out of storage?

Documents, jewellery, cash, perishables, and anything with sentimental or legal value stays with you. Electronics store fine when packed dry with silica gel; mattresses and sofas need breathable wrapping to avoid trapped moisture.
